Why nobody cares about your story.

When a gazelle spots a lion, it does something that seems stupid.

It jumps straight up into the air, over and over. It burns the energy it needs to outrun the lion.

Biologists call this stotting. It sends a message to the lion that says: I’m so healthy and fast, I can afford to waste energy. Go pick someone else.

Same with the peacock’s tail: it’s useless, expensive, and hard to hide from predators.

But that’s the trick: the signals we trust are the ones that are too expensive to fake.

For leaders: the safe story that is easy to find and easy to share doesn’t move hearts and minds. Because it didn't cost anything.

But the story that silences the room is the story that cost something to share. The heavy moment, the mistake, the loss. The story that causes that sparky-lump in your throat that’s hard to swallow ... that is the story that moves people.

If your story is free to tell, your audience already knows what it’s worth…

Nothing.
